SPIRIT OF SUCCESS Workshops

What: A series of professional development workshops that include: "Your Resume and Cover Letter", "Application Forms", "Planning Your Career", "Job Search Smarter, Not Harder", "Aceing the Inberview Part I and II", "Internet Job Search", "Tapping the Hidden Job Market", "Boomers and Better Tips", "Out of Jail, In to Work", "You've Got It, Now Keep It", "Be Financially Fit", "Basic Computer Literacy", and "Customer Service Skills".
Families Preparing a New Generation
Where: Phoenix Indian Center

Time: 6pm to 8pm
What: A series of ten (10) workshops that provide information and strategies to assist American Indian families with: substance abuse and resistance; behavior management; communication skills; and building community based on culture and values. A minimum of three (3) parent training cycles will be held annually.
Living Skills/Financial Management
Where: Phoenix Indian Center
When: Tuesdays – please call for updates
Time: 6pm to 8pm
What: A series of eight (8) sessions that help families create community, better understand the wealth of services in greater Phoenix and teach skills on managing your finances. Classes are offered four (4) times a year.
Adult Education Classes/GED Preparation
Where: Phoenix Indian Center
When: Monday - Thursday – please call for updates
Time: 9am to 4pm
What: A series of classes, students are placed into the appropriate class based on thier skills and abilities. Instructors also offer individual tutoring time.
Guardianship Clinics
Where: Phoenix Indian Center
When: Various dates – please call for updates
Time: 6pm to 8pm
What: A session for adults to further understand the process for legal guardianship and other permanency options for children in kinship situations and currently in care of friends or family members.
Intergenerational Diné Language Classes
Where: Mesa Public School, Student Services Building, 1025 N. Country Club Drive

Time: 6pm to 7pm
What: Class will teach Diné language from a traditional perspective using Diné culture. You will learn the basic alphabet system, numbering system, colors, and many more through the use of activities and audio visuals. This class will be open to all Diné people and their families (birth to elders). Come and enjoy learning the Diné language and hear some of the stories and teachings of our elders. Storytelling will be a part of this class to give insight to Oral Traditions.
Diné Culture Classes
Where: Phoenix Indian Center, GED classroom, 4520 N. Central Ave, Suite 250 (Second Floor)
When: Monday nights
Time: 6:00pm to 7:30pm
What:This class will teach the basic fundamentals of Diné culture using the Diné Philosophy. Through the use of visual aides, text books, and presenters, you will gain a better understanding of the Diné culture. This class will be open to all Diné people and their families (birth to elders). Come and enjoy learning about the Diné language and culture. Hear some of the stories and teachings of our elders. Storytelling will be a part of this class to give insight to Oral Traditions. Time: 9:00am to 11:00am
What: The Adult language classes offer three different levels of classes and rotate each semester. Please call for level of class that will be taught.
Beginning Navajo
This class is for the non-Navajo speaker emphasizing on the Diné alphabet system, the sound system and the structure of the Diné language. You will learn the Diné language with an emphasis on pronunciation and vowels. You will learn basic vocabulary which includes numbers, colors and simple dialogue. You will learn the correct introduction using your clans. Materials fee of $25 is required.
Intermediate Navajo
This class will enhance your basic Navajo conversation, reading and writing skills through poetry, songs and children’s literature. It is an introduction to conversational Navajo. Materials fee of $25 is required.
Navajo Literacy
This class is for the fluent speakers of Diné language, and focuses on reading and writing the spoken language. You will learn to read and write, understand the alphabet sound system through poetry, children’s literature, storytelling, singing and other written materials.Materials fee of $25 is required.
Navajo Singing Classes
Classes are held on Saturdays from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm at the Phoenix Indian Center. This class will require a $25 materials fee and is open to all ages, children and adults. The class will teach social songs, the meaning of the songs they learn, they will also learn different songs such as shoe game, corn grinding songs and most contemporary songs in the Diné language. This class performs at various functions throughout the Maricopa valley and at the annual Phoenix Indian Center’s gala in the spring. This class is switched with the Navajo weaving class, please call to inquire which class is being offered for that semester.
Navajo Weaving Classes
Classes are held on Saturdays from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm at the Phoenix Indian Center. This class requires a $35 materials fee and is open to children and adults. The class will teach how to warp a loom, and the basics of weaving patterns. Students will learn the significance of the loom, the spinning of wool, and the tools needed to weave. Students provide their own looms and weaving tools for this class. This class is switched with the Navajo singing class, please call to inquire which class is being offered for that semester.
Children’s Classes
This class will teach language through songs, learners will explore various singing styles and songs sung for different purposes in Diné culture. It will teach social songs, patriotic songs, corn grinding songs, and children’s songs. Materials fee of $25 is required.
Seasonal Stories
Each season the Phoenix Indian Center offers culturally-based storytelling that is open to all community members in the Phoenix metropolitan area. Information on each session will be posted to the Website and information distributed electronically.
